Warm-up Review

Say this

Quick warm-up — same sound as yesterday: a says /ă/.

  • Visual: Flash a → kids say /ă/ (sound, not “ay”).
  • Auditory: You say /ă/ → they air-write a.
  • Blend: /ă/ /t/at · /ă/ /m/am.
Flash & blend
a → /ă/ at am
Watch for
Clipped /ă/ (apple), not letter name. Keep it snappy — this is review only.

Word Work

~6–8 minutes · build & change
8:00
Say this

We’re building and changing words with a = /ă/. Only letters we’ve taught — sound every letter left to right. No guessing!

  • Decode (read): Show a word. Finger under each letter: sound → blend → say the word.
  • Encode (spell): You say a word. Kids segment sounds, then write/build each letter.
  • Change one sound: “Change at to am.” What letter changed?
Build / change chain
at → am → as at am as
Parent script — encoding
  • “Say at. What sounds? /ă//t/. Write them.”
  • “Now change it to am. Which sound is different? Change that letter.”
  • “Now make as.”
Watch for
Sounding out every letter — never “I know that word” from memory alone. If stuck, remodel: point, sound, blend. Stick to at / am / as (taught letters only).

Heart Words

~1–2 minutes · very light
2:00
Honest note
Lesson 1 is early alphabet — UFLI typically has few or no Heart Words this early. Heart Words (irregular high-frequency words) ramp up in later lessons. Save energy for Word Work and Connected Text.
Say this (optional)

If your Lesson 1 materials list a Heart Word, practice it once: heart the irregular part, sound the rest. Otherwise skip:

  • “No new Heart Words today — we’re saving our brains for building words with /ă/!”
Watch for
Don’t invent irregular words. Stay faithful to UFLI — none yet is the right call for Lesson 1.

Connected Text

~4–5 minutes · mini story quest
5:00
Early alphabet
Full UFLI decodable passages start around Lesson 8. Today = oral “read the cards” quest — short VC items with a only. Sound → blend → say. No whole-word guessing.

🗺️ Quest: Find the /ă/ treasures

Parent holds up one card at a time (or points below). Junie sounds left to right, then says the word. Collect all 5 treasures!

  1. Treasure 1: at
  2. Treasure 2: am
  3. Treasure 3: as
  4. Treasure 4: at again (speed check)
  5. Treasure 5: Parent says “I’m looking at you — I am glad!” Kids echo the /ă/ words they hear.
Say this
  • “Finger under the first letter. What’s the sound? Next letter? Blend — what’s the word?”
  • Celebrate each correct blend. If wrong, remodel once, then try again.
Watch for
Decoding every letter. Don’t accept “I remembered it.” Stretch the sounds, then say it fast.

Quick playful cool-down

~3–5 min

🍎 Apple /ă/ echo + robot game

Echo: You say /ă/ (apple sound). Kids echo /ă/. Silly voices welcome — soft, loud, whisper, robot.

Robot: Break “apple” into robot talk, then smash it back together:

/ă/ · p · ple apple!

Keep it playful only — celebrate the /ă/ sound. No pressure to read yet.
